An easy way to crochet a clothes hanger cover

Like everyone else, I have some favorite tops that just slide off of their hangers.  When I went to crochet a cover with a super simple single crochet wrap, I loved how the top of the stitches looked, but found out quickly that the crochet just rolls around.  The hanger was too smooth and I wasn't happy with the result.

I had recently used floral tape to fix up some silk "fall leaves" for a patio display, and I wondered if the floral tape wouldn't provide just enough tackiness without being too sticky.  And I quickly found out that it is just perfect as a base for the crochet cover.  It's easy to apply too, very forgiving.  Just stretching it lightly releases the tackiness that makes it so useful in floral arrangements.  And the single crochet stitches were now happy to sit on the hanger with no floppiness.

I used worsted weight acrylic yarn and a size J hook.  The pic above shows the tape in place.  I used white floral tape, but it also comes in green.  And is very inexpensive.

My favorite kind of craft project - using leftover yarn and supplies I already have!  BTW, to finish off the hanger, I worked 5 chains to go around the bottom of the handle (where the beginning slip knot is sitting) and cut the yarn.  I wove the end back into the last single crochet stitch and ran it back through the stitches.  The floral tape holds it nicely in place.

This project went from hopeless to successful in the space of a thought!
