A recycled jar with a fancy crochet cover

1/5/2018

recycled jar with crochet cover
I was getting ready to toss an empty plastic jar into the recycling bin, when I realized it was a good shape to hold my double pointed needles.

I used some Gedifra Ayalayarn and crocheted a jar cover.  The openwork pattern I used was very simple: 2 dc, front post dc, 2 dc, chain, cross dc over two stitches, chain, and repeat to end.

Crochet is great for this kind of project, as you can check your work will fit the jar, as you go along.  Once I got to the top of the jar, I added a 3 chain mesh to run the ribbon through.

Gedifra yarn I used to crochet the jar cover
I used a 6 mm crochet hook.  It took about 1.2 ounces of Ayala yarn to make the cover.  Ayala is a rayon/linen blend with a shiny nylon filament that gives it a little shine.  It is very pleasant to work with - like a a very fine chainette yarn.

Gedifra makes their yarn in Italy and I really love their linen blends.  I snagged a big lot of Ayala yarn on eBay some time back and still have about 6 skeins - all different colors.  Waiting for inspiration - or a long romp thru my Ravelry queue.

To make my storage jar even more useful, I added a crochet motif with 4 beaded stitch markers.  I found a flower brad from Michael's that was perfect to attach the motif to the jar.
