My first knit dog sweater

A very easy knit dog sweater

Along with the pugs, we have a very delicate miniature rat terrier.   As the cold really bothers her, I finally decided to knit her a no-frills sweater.  It could not have been easier.

I knit a rectangle 9 inches wide by 10 inches long in an broken rib pattern, and added a few rows of ribbing at the top.

It was a little short on the sides, so I added a crocheted shell stitch trim., adding a button loop while I was at it.   I  sewed together the ribbing and  added a big button to close it.  Voila!  It fit.  And the shell stitch trim has kind of a war-dog mystique going on.

It's been in and out and gotten dirty.  It was made from a Big Lots mystery yarn, but hand-washes easy peasy.  It looks and feels just like cotton, and is very soft to the touch.

It's more of a poncho I guess, as there are no sleeves, but it seems to keep her warm when she goes outside.

I wanted to get a pic of her frolicking in her pretty sweater, but all I could get was skulking and cowering as she hates to get her picture taken.  You will have to take my word for it...she loves her sweater!

I'd like to try this pattern for my son's second grade teacher as an Xmas gift. She has French bulldogs. As they are close to pug size...any advice on what size rectangle to go with? Thank you!

Hi Tara, The dog sweater/caprelet on this blog is really small as our little "circus dog" is SO tiny. But we do have a great big oversized puggle and I measured her. She is 14" from neck to where her tail starts and 24" around the chest. I think she is about the size of a bulldog, so these dimensions might work. Best wishes, Imelda (Pugcentric Pursuits)
